Allegrow Studio is one place for the part of teaching that happens outside the lesson: who practiced and what they worked on, this week’s assignments, the schedule, and billing. Your students and their parents use a free app that connects to it. This page walks through everything it does.
Runs in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone. Your students, their practice, assignments, lesson times, notes and billing, on one screen.
The family app – for them
Students practice with it; parents see the week. It’s free for families. It also works as an app on a phone’s or tablet’s home screen.
You don’t have to use all of it. Many teachers start with practice and assignments, and turn on scheduling or billing later, or never.
Practice you can trust
The heart of Allegrow is a practice timer that counts only while the student is actually playing. It listens the way a tuner does, on their own device, and nothing is recorded. When the playing stops, so does the clock.
Who practiced, and how much. Minutes and days for every student, for the week and over time.
Needs attention. A short list on your home screen: who hasn’t practiced in days, who asked to move a lesson, who hasn’t connected yet, whose payment is overdue.
How they practiced, if you want it: focus (playing time against time with the microphone on), tuning for instruments where the player shapes each note, and steadiness with the metronome. You decide whether each shows as a number, as a trend only, or not at all – for the whole studio or one student.
Before you teach. An optional email before your first lesson of the day with each student’s week, and a weekly digest on Sunday evening.
Practice logged by hand, or with the microphone off, is marked as such, so you can tell it apart from time the app heard.
Assignments
Write what to practice and it appears on the student’s practice screen that week.
A title, how to practice it, a tempo (one tap sets their metronome), minutes a day, and a due date.
Attachments: a demo you record in the studio, a photo of the page, a PDF, or a link to a video.
Students tick each assignment on the days they work on it, and can send you a short recording to hear between lessons. You can reply with a note.
Print a one-page practice sheet for the week, or email it to the family as a PDF.
Bring in assignments for many students at once from a list.
A passage to play
For instruments that play one note at a time – strings, woodwinds, brass and voice – an assignment can include a line of notes for the student to play along with.
Type the notes as written on their page, or import them from notation software (uncompressed MusicXML).
The student plays at their own speed. Each note turns green when the app hears it, or red if it was wrong or skipped.
You see the best try of the day on the assignment: notes right, wrong notes, and average tuning.
It follows the notes, not the rhythm, and it isn’t offered for piano, guitar or other instruments that play several notes at once.
How practice is set up
You set these per student, or once for the studio. A family can choose their own instead, and you’re told when they do.
Setting
What you choose
Weekly plan
Minutes for each day of the week, with rest days.
What counts
Only music the app hears, any sound (for warm-ups, clapping, quiet instruments), or a plain timer.
Only their instrument
Optional: count only when the app hears their kind of instrument, not singing, a sibling’s violin or music playing in the room.
Pauses allowed
How long it can be quiet before the clock stops, from a few seconds to two minutes.
How it looks
Playful, with streaks, badges and confetti, or calm, with just the minutes – good for teens and adults.
You can also set short-term challenges and award badges of your own.
Music theory games
Short flash-card rounds in the family app: note reading in treble, bass, alto and tenor clef and on the grand staff, rhythm, symbols, key signatures, intervals, chords, and ear training. Each has levels that open up as rounds are passed.
A placement check finds each student’s starting level, or you set it, with presets by stage from early elementary to advanced.
Make your own sets: exactly the notes, clefs or symbols you’re teaching this month.
Some games listen to the instrument: play the note you see, or echo a note you hear.
Lessons and scheduling
Your week: each student’s regular lesson time, one-off lessons, and what’s today.
Families cancel in their app, under the policy you set: how far ahead they must cancel, whether a late cancel is charged, whether an on-time cancel earns a makeup credit, and optionally how many cancellations carry no charge per month, semester or school year.
Lesson changes: if you allow it, a family suggests a new day and time. Nothing moves until you accept.
Makeups and new students: publish your open times on a booking page. Families with a credit book a makeup; new families ask for a trial lesson.
Calendar: subscribe to your teaching schedule in Apple, Google or Outlook calendars. Families can add their lessons to theirs.
Reminders: an email to families the evening before or the morning of a lesson, if you turn it on.
Lesson notes: typed, dictated, or scanned from handwriting with your phone.
Billing
A short set-up walks you through it: what you charge, how you’re paid, and when it’s due.
Charge per lesson, per hour, per month or per semester, with a studio rate and a different one for any student.
Charges follow the schedule, including late cancels and the late fee you choose.
Getting paid: keep a simple ledger and record payments yourself, share your own payment link, or let families pay by card in their app. Card payments go to you through Stripe, to your own Stripe account.
Families see their balance in the app. Reminders go out on the schedule you set, and stop when it’s paid.
Allegrow doesn’t take a percentage of what your families pay you. Stripe charges its usual card fee.
Recitals and events
Add the recital once: who’s playing, what, and in what order. Print a program, and every family sees the date and their child’s piece in the app, counting down.
What families get
The practice timer, a metronome, a tuner, and the theory games.
This week’s assignments on the practice screen, with your demos and attachments.
A parent’s page: each child’s week at a glance, upcoming lessons, and what’s owed. No music background needed.
A weekly summary by email, if the parent wants it.
Practicing is free for families. When you’re on a paid Allegrow plan, your families also get Family Plus at no charge: a whole year of practice history, family rewards, and their own practice tasks.
If the free month ends without a plan, your studio is paused, not deleted. Choose a plan and everything, including every family’s connection, comes back as it was. You can cancel a plan at any time.
